A Medico-historical Study on Leprosy
ì°çÈ÷Ê/Lee, Yung Taik
Abstract
The author has tried to trace the concept on the aetiology of leprosy and the counter-measures to leprosy(treatment, isolation, registration) in the ages of Lee Dynasty, treating of materials showing symptoms equivalent to those of leprosy of modern medicine, obtained mainly from Wang-jo-Sil-Rok. (Actual Record of Lee Dynasty), Hyang-Yak-Jip-Sung-Bang (Collection of Home Produced Drugs). and Tong-Eui-Po-Kam (Treasury of Eastern Medicine).
The author has come to the following conclusions
(1) .They. attributed the aetiology of leprosy primarily to wind (ill-natured wind, connected wind) and secondarily to heavenly punishment and demonism.
(2) They conceived the infection-of leprosy, but could not present the authority to back it up.
(3) It may be conjectured that they intended to drive out demons, supposed aetiology of leprosy, from human body letting the lepers eat human flesh and organs to disgust them.
(4) Their pharmaco therapy seems to have come to no purpose. It must have stayed within the limit of symptomatic treatment.
(5) The collective housing of lepers (isolation) bears primary raison d etre in protecting lepers from the persecution and murder committed by the laymen who hate and fear them extremely.
(6) They made survey and registration on the situations of lepers, but n o suitable counter-measure was initiated.
(7) The isolation, the treatment, and the survey and registration of lepers must have played a role in controlling the diffusion of patients.
